Steven Dietz (June 23, 1958) is an American playwright and director. He was born in Denver, Colorado, and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in theatre. He then became the director of new plays at The Playwrights鈥 Center in Minneapolis. In 1988, ACT Theatre in Seattle commissioned Dietz to write God鈥檚 Country, a documentary play about the rise of white supremacy in the United States. Dietz writes across genres: his plays Last of the Boys, God鈥檚 Country, and Lonely Planet are political, and Becky鈥檚 New Car and More Fun Than Bowling are comedies. He also writes thrillers and adaptations, including a popular adaptation of Bram Stoker鈥檚 Gothic novel Dracula.
Dietz has directed at several regional theatres, including Seattle Repertory Theatre, Denver Center Theatre Company, and Northlight Theatre in Chicago. He began teaching at the University of Texas at Austin in 2006, splitting his time between Seattle and Austin. Dietz is one of the most widely produced playwrights in the United States, particularly at regional theatres. He also regularly contributes to American Theatre Magazine with articles about new play development and contemporary issues in the theatre landscape.
