Lawrence D. Cohen is an American screenwriter and librettist. He began his career as a film and theatre critic and then was an assistant to director-choreographer Michael Bennett on his Broadway productions of Twigs and Seesaw in 1971 and 1973, respectively. Afterward, Cohen wrote the screenplay for the 1976 film adaptation of Stephen King鈥檚 novel Carrie, a highly successful movie. Cohen found his niche in the horror genre, and he wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of Peter Straub鈥檚 Ghost Story, as well as the teleplays for the made-for-television versions of Stephen King鈥檚 It and The Tommyknockers. In 1981, Cohen began work on the stage musical adaptation of Carrie with composer Michael Gore and lyricist Dean Pitchford. The musical opened in 1988 and was a huge flop, but after gaining a cult following, it enjoyed a much more successful 2012 off-Broadway revival.
