Charlie Smalls (1943-1947) was an American songwriter and composer. He attended the Juilliard School and toured with the New York Jazz Repertory Company right before starting work on arguably his most notable work and accomplishment, The Wiz. A Modern Re-telling of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through a vibrantly black lens using Rhythm and Blues music and soul as the primary vehicle of exploration. Smalls won the Tony award for best score in 1975. He was the composer and lyricist for the musical hit.
