Context
Prince Henry (Hal) and Falstaff are cavorting in the tavern with other men of the town. Falstaff has just returned with serious news for the Prince. He declares that the Percys and Mortimer have now joined the rebellion against his father, King Henry IV. Prince Hal must go see his father, much to his annoyance. To prepare for this, Falstaff and Prince Hal take turns playing the King so the Prince can practice explaining why he is not defending his King and country.

PRINCE HENRY
Do thou stand for my father, and examine me upon the
particulars of my life.
FALSTAFF
Shall I? content: this chair shall be my state,
this dagger my sceptre, and this cushion my crown.
PRINCE HENRY
Thy state is taken for a joined-stool, thy golden
sceptre for a leaden dagger, and thy precious rich
crown for a pitiful bald crown!
