Context
Sganarelle has been duped by his ward, Isabella, and her lover, Valere, but he is completely in the dark. He truly believes that Isabella is dutiful and faithful to him. Despite the difference in their ages, he plans on marrying Isabella. She has told him that Valere means to whisk her away and has begged Sganarelle to stop him.
