Context
Simon and Grusha have both fled their village in the wake of a military coup, but not before promising themselves to one another. Now, miles away in the Northern Mountains, they spy each other on opposite banks of the river. However, things have changed. In order to appease her religious sister-in-law, who is offended by the notion that Michael might appear to be a child born out of wedlock, Grusha has married a man in the mountains.
