Context
Jo has met up with her boyfriend, 鈥榯he Boy鈥� after school. He surprised her at the school gates, and they have walked home together. Jo has kept the relationship from her mother, as she does not want her mother prying and she is also unaware that the relationship is slightly unconventional for 1950s society as the Boy is black.
