On a stormy night, the Tramp has stopped at the last house at the head of Glen Malure, looking for shelter. He has found Nora Burke keeping watch over the corpse of her recently departed husband, who had cursed her anyone except his far-off sister touched his body for laying out. Nora has left the house to call in a neighbor, and the Tramp is nervously keeping watch over the corpse, saying a prayer as he stitches to keep himself safe.
