Context
Now a successful writer, James Barrie has returned to his childhood village in Scotland after moving to London. His mother, Margaret, is a bitter woman who, for many years, blamed James for the death of his brother and her favorite son, Davey. She no longer resents James for Davey鈥檚 death but still treats him with great hostility despite his efforts to please her. This scene takes place at Margaret鈥檚 house. Start: Mother: The author is awake, I see. They live their lives very differently in the big city! Old as I am, I鈥檝e already been to church and done a full day鈥檚 wash. Sleepin鈥� 鈥榯il ten! (Barrie picks up sheet from the clothes basket) Here, and what do you think you鈥檙e doing?
Barrie: I鈥檝e come down to help.
