Context
David is a member of one of the most prominent families in the county. He has inherited a plantation and married a rich local girl. However, twenty years ago he had an affair with Lady Torrance, but abandoned her following her father鈥檚 murder. He was unaware that, as well as breaking her heart, he had left her pregnant.
