Context
Prior to Caesar鈥檚 arrival in Egypt, Cleopatra and her younger brother, Ptolemy鈥攁ided by his guardian, Pothinus鈥攈ad been at war, fighting for the Egyptian throne. At present, Caesar has maintained a stronghold in Alexandria for months, and reinstated Cleopatra to power. Pothinus, held as a Roman prisoner in the city, attempts to turn Cleopatra鈥檚 loyalty from Caesar. He does not realize that it is Caesar鈥檚 influence that has turned Cleopatra from young girl into a queen.

CLEOPATRA. (Sitting down again) Now, Pothinus: why did you bribe Ftatateeta to bring you hither?
POTHINUS. (Studying her gravely) Cleopatra: what they tell me is true. You are changed.
CLEOPATRA. Do you speak with Caesar every day for six months: and you will be changed.
POTHINUS. It is the common talk that you are infatuated with this old man.
