(Laura sighs.)

Dad, I don’t want to fight with you. There are so many things I’ve always wanted to tell you. It’s so nice to see you like this. I’m just glad to see you today.

PETER

What was it that you wanted to tell me the last time we were together, but couldn’t?

LAURA

I read in a psychology magazine that girls who have poor love relationships with the opposite sex usually had poor or no relationships with their fathers. I have a happy marriage. You were very good to me. I kind of realize what it means to be a parent now that I am one.

PETER

(Still sipping hot coffee.)

(Peters speaks slowly in a low but steady voice.)

How’s your mother?

LAURA

She’s fine but I thought you didn’t care. God forbid I mention her in front of your wife.
