Context
This is the opening scene to the fictional murder mystery play, 鈥楳urder at Haversham Manor鈥, which the cast are (attempting) to perform. Jonathan is playing the corpse, and Robert and Dennis must discover him鈥.if they can get on the set. The plot of the fictional play here is second fiddle to the precise slapstick performance of the scene. The scene directions are therefore key. None of the men are particularly good actors and Dennis reads the longer words in his script off his hand.

End: Dennis: Right away, sir!
He goes to leave through the door, but it still won鈥檛 budge. He opens the front of the long-case clock next to the door and gets inside instead.
Robert: Good God! Haversham murdered at his own engagement party!
