Context
Fisherman Afa promised to take old Hounakin out in his canoe to fish, but now the old man is too terrified to move, and is frozen in the canoe, which is still on shore. The men have also just seen Gacia, a fellow fisherman, return soaked--the sea was too rough, and he was thrown from his canoe. Now, Afa tries to understand why Hounakin wants to go out in the dangerous waters, while Augustin (Afa鈥檚 mate and Hounakin鈥檚 godson) attempts to broker peace between them.

AFA: (to Hounakin) You can swim, papa?
HOUNAKIN: Non.
AFA: (sitting down suddenly, interested now that the canoe is equipped for work) Tell me again, old man, why for you want to work the sea? And you so old? You never stay in your house and hear wind breaking wood trees?
[... 鈥 鈥
HOUNAKIN: Don鈥檛 worry, you will not see this old man so again, only, a man must talk, old man talk to the wind or man go mad 鈥 (Afa offers him bread.) I have no heart to eat. I old, old, more old than Dauphin self. Rama and I see when didn鈥檛 have no Dauphin, only cane, and a green river by the canes. We come here first.
