Context
Chaim and Chaya have arrived in Halifax, Canada, separately fleeing the pogroms--violent riots aimed at the massacre of the Jewish community. They meet at Pier 21, the immigration processing centre in Halifax, both reeling from the atrocities they have witnessed back home. Years later, they have both now settled in Montreal, Quebec, and are finding their place in their new Jewish community. When Chaim hears that Chaya is also living in Montreal, he seeks her out. CHAIM: You - you鈥檙e very - you鈥檙e how I remember you. [...] Do you remember me?

CHAYA: Chaim -
CHAIM: Chaim Moscovitch - yes! I was at shul, I heard your father鈥檚 name, I said: 鈥淵ankel Yankovitch with a daughter Chaya?鈥� I said 鈥淲hat are the chances! I鈥檝e met your daughter: she was the first thing I saw in Canada!鈥�

CHAIM: You鈥檒l tell your father it won鈥檛 work out between us?
CHAYA thinks for a second, gazing at him. Then stands. But she doesn鈥檛 usher him to the door. She goes to the samovar and pours CHAIM more tea. Sets it in front of him. He doesn鈥檛 move. He keeps looking at her.
CHAYA: Sit. Drink.
