Context
The Countess鈥� maid and life-long member of the staff at the Count's castle, Marceline, has summoned the doctor Bartholo to the castle to tend to the Countess; her husband鈥檚 wandering eye has caused the Countess to fall into a deep depression. Bartholo, for his part, is unsympathetic; the Countess was formerly his ward, and he had plans to marry her himself before Figaro ruined his plot. As a result, he鈥檚 holding a deep grudge against not only Figaro, but the Count鈥檚 whole household. Marceline

MARCELINE There you are! The ever-lasting doctor! Always so grave and formal that one might die waiting for your help just as a certain person once got married in spite of all your precautions.
BARTHOLO Nasty-minded and spiteful as ever! Anyhow, why is my presence required at the castle? Has my Lord the Count had some mishap?
MARCELINE No, Doctor.
BARTHOLO Rosine, his deceitful Countess, is perhaps unwell, Heaven be praised!
MARCELINE She鈥檚 listless, languishing, pining away.
