Text

CATHY: Would you like to stay a little longer and practice today?

CHRIS: Uh, no thanks. Tomorrow should be plenty of p-practice.

CATHY: Okay. (beat) Bye.

CHRIS: Bye.

CATHY: Chris? I . . . uh . . . noticed something tonight?

CHRIS: What?

CATHY: When Mr./Ms. Wheatley told you to get into your character, and you did, when you really began to play your part, you didn鈥檛 stutter.

CHRIS: Yeah, that happens sometimes. Like when I talk to my dog. Or singing. Whispering鈥檚 the same way. I don鈥檛 read too much into it.

CATHY: What about just now?

CHRIS: What about it?

CATHY: When you were talking about your stuttering, you didn鈥檛 stutter.

CHRIS: Yeah, that happens too, unless I鈥檓 with my speech therapist.

CATHY: I didn鈥檛 know you went.

CHRIS: Wuh-wuh-once a week.

CATHY: Oh. Still, I think I see a pattern.

CHRIS: Wuh-wuh-what鈥檚 that?

CATHY: Well, when you鈥檙e someone else besides Chris, the boy who stutters, you do fine. Like when you鈥檙e my dad in our dramatic interpretation.
