Text

CATHY: I鈥檓 glad we鈥檙e going to be working together.

CHRIS: I haven鈥檛 agreed to d-do it yet.

CATHY: But you will鈥攔ight?

CHRIS: Like I said, I鈥檒l think about it. (beat) See ya.

CATHY: I鈥檒l walk with you.

(THEY both move towards the classroom door, and bump into each other.)

CATHY: Oops鈥斺€榮cuse me.

CHRIS: (Irritably) Go ahead.

CATHY: You know, Chris, if you don鈥檛 want to work with me just say no.

CHRIS: I didn鈥檛 say that. I just said I was g-gonna think about it.

CATHY: It鈥檚 what you鈥檙e not saying . . . and how you鈥檙e saying it.

CHRIS: That doesn鈥檛 make any sense.

CATHY: If you don鈥檛 like the kids in Speech & Debate鈥攚hy鈥檇 you join?

CHRIS: My mom made me j-join. I can鈥檛 play f-football anymore since I hurt my back, and she says I have to have some activity.

CATHY: But if you don鈥檛 like Speech & Debate do something else. Yearbook, newspaper, anything.

CHRIS: (beat) I have to do this.

CATHY: Why do you 鈥渉ave鈥 to do this?

CHRIS: My mom says so.

CATHY: Haven鈥檛 you heard of adolescent rebellion?

CHRIS: She says I have to do Speech & Debate so I won鈥檛 hide from m-my stutter.

CATHY: Oh.

CHRIS: So I won鈥檛 be afraid of speaking in public.

CATHY: I鈥檓 sorry.
