Context
Wang the water-seller is asleep in a drainage pipe when the three gods appear to him in a dream. He is pleased to see them, and asks them to help him interpret a parable that he read recently. The gods argue amongst themselves about the meaning of the story, and Wang explains that he sees a parallel between it and the situation that his friend, Shen Te, is currently in.
