Pegeen has just sent out the local girls and Widow Quin, all who came to meet and fawn over Christy after hearing that he had killed his father. Pegeen tells Christy that while she had not heard any news of his act of murder, but that she did read a story of a man hanged. This worries Christy, and Pegeen further tells him to keep to himself and not meddle with local girls, and begins to truly tease him about being caught and punished for his crime.
