Context
Pentheus, the young king of Thebes, has denounced Dionysus as the son of Zeus and therefore a god. But Dionysus and a cult of his followers (the Bacchae) have arrived in Thebes to prove his deity. Disguised as a Stranger (and captured as a prisoner), Dionysus meets Pentheus for the first time. His calm demeanor is a sharp contrast to Pentheus鈥� angry and potentially violent outbursts, foreshadowing the king鈥檚 fate before the play is over.
