Context
Hypatia and her mother have been left by themselves and, as they sew, they chat about belonging to the upper classes and Hypatia's forthcoming marriage. It is clear that Mrs. Tarleton does not sit entirely comfortably within upper class society and she offers Hypatia some advice about marrying up. Hypatia thinks she ought to be married by now but she is not in love with her fiancee.
