Context
Lord Illingworth and Mrs. Arbuthnot have not seen each other for many years. He has just find out that Gerald is his son--the son that he fathered with Mrs. Arbuthnot when he was twenty-two. However, he refused to marry her and she disappeared with their child. The couple discuss Gerald's professional prospects with Lord Illingworth and Mrs. Arbuthnot's concerns for their son.
